Well, partly it's by observing competitors' spammy links. I haven't tried to find a footprint, but doing that might help. Something like "Your search results delivered in 0.* seconds" -site:google.com -site:yahoo.com etc. I don't know if that one in particular would work, but it's just an example to share the idea. Actually, the -site:google.com shouldn't matter, because the legit search engines noindex their search results pages, afaik.
